Children to get their skates on in April

A FUN, active program on eight wheels is being offered at Ballan Neighbourhood House these school holidays.

Children aged six to 12 will have the chance to learn how to roller skate.

Princess on Skates will run structured classes from the neighbourhood house that aim to teach children or enhance their existing skills.

The sessions focus on building skills, confidence and independence in a safe and encouraging way.

There will also be acrobatic demonstrations to present what’s possible as skills improve.

Lesley Bird, program and marketing administrator at the neighbourhood house, said the Ballan organisation had not offered the classes before.

“One class is for first time skaters,” she said. “The second class is called Beyond Basics, which is basically for children that have got some sort of skills on skates.”

She said some children had already registered for the classes, which will be held on Tuesday 7 April.

“It seems to be quite popular,” Mrs Bird said. “It’s something we haven’t done before, and it seems to be of interest.”

She said there was potential for regular classes to be held.

“The benefit for the children is it’s not been done before,” she said. “It’s local. It’s something new. It’s going to be during the holidays, which again, is something new.”

“So fingers crossed it takes off, but it looks like it’s of interest at the moment, which is good.”

Each class costs $42. Participants can either bring their own skates or hire them on the day. On registration, participants can provide their shoe sizes.

The First Time/New Skaters class will be held from 11am to 12.15pm, and the Beyond Basics from 12.30 to 1.45pm.
