Local Lions help Young Street Kinder bloom
JUST in time for winter, the Lions Club of Bacchus Marsh has partnered with Young Street Kindergarten to provide the centre with two new timber planter boxes.
Fourteen volunteers braved a cold morning last week to install the boxes, which will be used as part of the children’s outdoor learning program. The planter boxes will give pupils the opportunity to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs.
The initiative also aims to foster an early love for nature and gardening while teaching vital lessons about sustainability, ecosystems, and where healthy food comes from.
During the planning phase, Lions members collaborated closely with kinder staff to determine the most suitable design to fit into the garden.
Every piece of timber was measured, pre-cut, and prepared ahead of time, allowing for a seamless and efficient installation on the day.
Club president John Peebles praised the collaborative effort, noting that the project perfectly captured the unique community spirit of Bacchus Marsh.
“When local volunteers and businesses come together, we see real results,” he said. “These projects make our town stronger and give our young people more opportunities to learn and thrive.

“It’s a really old kindergarten – it’s been there since the 1950s. Many of our members have grandchildren at the kinder, so it felt like a real circle moment to help out.”
The successful project was made possible through vital local business support.
The Lions Club of Bacchus Marsh thanked Bunnings Warehouse in Melton for donating all the timber and materials required to bring the project to life.
“The kinder contacted Bunnings and needed to increase the amount of area they had to plant,” Peebles said.
“We have a great relationship with Bunnings and do a barbecue with them… we are just rapt we could help enhance our local community in this way.”
