THE aromatic scent of eucalyptus smoke wafted through the cold morning air as Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Traditional Owner Uncle Colin Hunter Jnr Jnr conducted a smoking ceremony in central Bacchus Marsh on Tuesday morning.

The age-honoured ceremony at the Village Green marked the arrival of NAIDOC Week in Moorabool Shire.

“A smoking ceremony is a cleansing to the mind, body and soul,” Hunter Jnr Jnr told the crowd that included Moorabool Shire mayor Cr Steve Venditti-Taylor, members of the local Indigenous community, service club representatives, and residents.

The local government area includes parts of Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung, Wadawurrung, and Dja Dja Wurrung Country.

“I would like to respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land,” Cr Venditti-Taylor said.

“NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest continuous living cultures on earth.

“The 2026 theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marks an important milestone and acknowledges the strength, resilience and leadership of First Nations Communities across generations.

“This year’s theme reflects on the significant contributions of Elders, community leaders, artists, advocates and young people who have helped shape and strengthen community, culture and identity over the past five decades.

“It is also an opportunity to recognise the ongoing importance of culture, storytelling, connection to country and community while looking ahead to the future with pride and optimism.”

Celebrations continue today, Friday 10 July, at Ballan Library at 2.30pm, with families invited to enjoy a cultural craft activity celebrating Indigenous culture in a fun and engaging way.

Everyone is also invited to gather in the Ballan Library courtyard at 3.30pm for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Shannen Mennen, followed by afternoon tea.

NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week 2026 began on 5 July and will continue until 12 July.
