FRESH from the club’s biggest ever contingent being selected for Coates League squads, a local female football coordinator is encouraging more young women to get involved in the sport.

2022 BFLW Coordinator of the Year, Leanne Basset, is female football coordinator at the Bacchus Marsh Cobras, and said there was huge potential for local girls to both have fun, and make it at the highest level.

“It’s an exciting time for women and girls to play footy as it not only offers tremendous health benefits, but it also teaches positive life lessons by instilling a sense of teamwork and camaraderie, and helps increase their confidence and self-esteem and physicality with a contact sport,” Ms Basset said.

“The focus at the Cobras is to continue to grow and develop girls’ football to provide girls a pathway and opportunity for them to play at the highest level and have fun along the way with their friends.”

Along with the crop of eleven Cobras girls playing for the Rebels and Jets in the Coates League this season, there are also two former Cobras playing in the AFLW: Jemima Woods (Richmond) and Tamara Henry (Adelaide).

“Those girls are an inspiration to any young girl that wants to play AFLW. It’s great for the community to see them at the top level, and it should serve as an example to any local girl with the ambition to play at the AFLW that they can,” Ms Basset said.

“We’d love some more girls to come along, become a part of a great family club, and have some fun with your friends.”
