FLETCHER Street Cottage volunteer Ella Vivian-Kay has been named the 2025 Northern Rivers Young Volunteer of the Year.

The 23-year-old began volunteering at the Byron Bay homelessness hub soon after moving to the region 18 months ago as a way to connect with her new community. She helps prepare, cook and serve breakfast to people in need — all while juggling three other jobs.

Vivian-Kay said she enjoys connecting with people from all walks of life and learning new skills without the pressure of what would come with a paid position.

“My time at Fletcher Street has really opened my eyes to the importance of offering support to those of us in the community that are in need of extra assistance, whether that be a warm meal or someone to chat with because you never know what battle someone is fighting at any given moment,” she said.

“Fletcher Street really is a safe space to all who walk through its doors.

“Every day is very different to the next which is another reason why I love being involved because it shows the real and raw side of Byron that not everyone gets to see and for me that is the greatest privilege.”

Vivian-Kay said attending the Northern Rivers Awards ceremony made her realise the impact volunteers have across the region.

“When we simply offer our time and hearts to the world without the desire to receive anything back, an incredibly uplifting energy is circled back around and positive change occurs right before our eyes,” she said.

Regional award winners will go on to represent the Northern Rivers at the Gala State Ceremony later this year, where the NSW Volunteer of the Year will be announced.
