Leading Jockey Jett Newman enjoys rapid rise to the top
TALENTED jockey Jett Newman has capitalised on her early success racing on Northern Rivers tracks, having now attracted rides and attention from trainers in the Sydney metropolitan area.
The 18-year-old Murwillumbah-based apprentice has ridden more than 35 winners this season and currently leads the state’s country apprentice standings.
Owners and trainers had a glimpse into her future when she rode a winning double for Dunn in her first metropolitan appearance at Rosehill in Sydney last month.
Winning two races on debut at the top level is a rare feat, made even more impressive with her second victory coming in a $180,000 event which featured champion jockey Nash Rawiller.
She has since won more races locally, taking her to more than 80 career wins.
Newman burst on to the scene 12 months ago with a winning debut at Murwillumbah before claiming four races at Ballina just 12 days later.
She has gone on to record multiple wins at Ballina, while continuing to build her reputation across Northern Rivers tracks.
“She’s been pretty incredible to watch since the first time she came here,” Ballina Jockey Club general manager Matthew Bertram said.
“Ballina isn’t the easiest track to ride, but she looks destined to have plenty of success.
“There are a lot of talented female jockeys coming through and she’s found a good home with Matt Dunn. He’ll find the right races for her and she’s only going to keep getting better.”
Newman is the daughter of two-time champion apprentice Mitch Newman and brings a strong equestrian background, having previously enjoyed success in showjumping and pony racing around the Hawkesbury region.
During her recent Sydney trip, Dunn also arranged for Newman to meet former champion jockey Darren Beadman, offering further insight into racing at the highest level.
She last rode locally at the Tweed River Jockey Club on February 1 and will likely have rides at the Lismore Turf Club TAB meeting on Tuesday, February 10.
