MORE than 550 trees and shrubs have been planted to help restore the riparian zone of Kennett River.

The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority and Kennett Community Action Group hosted a planting day last week to revegetate the area.

The riparian zone of Kennett River is beloved by the local community but has been under stress due to increased tourism and pressures on local wildlife.

The works will help improve conditions for wildlife, increase biodiversity and minimise the impact of visitors.

Conversation ranger Inala Swart said the area is now in a fantastic state.

“Over the past few months, our conservation team has been hard at work managing weeds and spreading mulch.

“We recently undertook a cultural heritage induction and pre-dug holes for the plants to ensure everything was ready for a big day of planting.

“Last Saturday’s planting event in particular was a tremendous success, bolstered by the enthusiasm of the dedicated locals who braved the elements to join our Conservation team.

“We’ll continue to monitor the site, tackle any weeds and support the young plants as they establish themselves and thrive.”
