Rocky flips out with huge FMX feat

A SURF Coast freestyle motocross (FMX) rider has just performed a remarkable trick for his age and has his sights set on bigger and higher moves.

On Tuesday last week, Rocky Glynn landed a full backflip using a conventional dirt bike at the age of 10 years and five weeks.

Rocky’s dad Josh believes this may be a world record, as US motocross star Haiden Deegan did the same trick a decade ago when he was 10 years and five months old.

“We weren’t trying to beat it, to be honest,” Josh said.

“Even just doing a backflip at that age is huge – not many adults can do them.”

Josh said Rocky landing a backflip was a major box to tick in FMX.

“It’s on your list of things to do and not many people achieve it, so there’s a lot of stunts coming his way,” Josh said.

Rocky has been riding motorbikes since the age of two on his family’s property, which has several jumps, and landed a flip on his BMX when he was six years old.

“I think my first jump was at three or four,” he said.

“I do it because I’m really good at it and I love the sport. It’s just fun.

“There’s a bunch of great people in the world who do it, and I think one day I might live up to them.”

He said the backflip took about 20 seconds from hitting the throttle at the top of the run to landing on the bag and coming to a stop.

“I was nervous as, most people would be,” he said.

“But I’m just locked in and ready for anything that’s going to be thrown at me.”

Rocky said he practised on most days for about three months in the leadup to attempting the backflip.

“That was the hardest bit; knowing in myself that I had it,” he said.

Josh has set up ramps and jumps for Nitro Circus live shows in the past, and Rocky has immersed himself in the FMX world over the past six or seven years.

“He’s just grown up around it, and with the circle of friends we have,” Josh said.

Rocky and Josh will head to the US in August to do some filming with Nitro Circus, and hopefully be part of a Nitro Circus live show if insurance issues can be resolved.
