A BALLARAT photography group is holding a series of workshops with the aim of helping members learn new skills and meet likeminded people.

The Click Collective was created to change ideas about the photography industry as old school, and instead bring a modern and inclusive perspective.

One of the founding members, Emma Fortescue, had previously worked as a studio manager at a graphic design studio and is bringing those skills to the Click Collective.

“My business partner and I had been really interested in photography for the last 10 years or so,” she said.

“I thought that there wasn’t really anyone offering workshops in the Ballarat area that were around community and fostering relationships with people.

“It’s building a sense of community after a lot of people have been through isolation in the COVID period.”

The groups workshops are designed to help people starting out with photography to learn how to shoot in manual mode and frame shots.

“We offer a range of workshops and we start with beginner classes which are every Friday at Lake Wendouree and participants just need to bring their camera or phone,” said Fortescue.

The group also has a specialised nature meet coming up on Sunday 8 October in Lal Lal and astrophotography meets every Friday night from 7pm.

Fortescue said the group environment acts as a way for participants to learn from each other and feel as though they are in a safe environment.

“I feel that a lot of people starting out in photography can find it quite overwhelming,” she said.

“By having that community of people who are also learning it makes it less intimidating.

“As a woman as well I used to feel uncomfortable going out and doing astrophotography by myself so going out in a group offers that safety.”
