IT was a sunny day racing around the Weatherboard circuit for Eureka Cycling on 23 February and twenty-eight riders contested what would become a war of attrition.

Tim Canny rode off scratch solo. He caught second scratch, who left one-minute before him, within 11 kilometres and systematically chased down every other bunch with limited assistance and many riders just trying to hold his wheel.

Canny had the race lead with nine kilometres remaining and seven riders hanging on, hoping to snatch glory.

It wasn’t to be. The scratch rider proved too powerful on the final climb and won comfortably from an enthusiastic group who fought to the wire for the final positions.

Results – 1st – Tim Canny (scratch), 2nd – Dayne Pearce (1 min), 3rd – Tony Mirabella (5 min), 4th – Wayne Klauss (5 min), 5th – Matt Angus (10 min).
