Cycling Winter series third round

July 10, 2019 BY

THIRTY odd riders competed in graded division races on a short thirty-seven kilometre circuit on Sunday, 7 July.

The hilly out and back course made for exciting and hard contested races in round 3 of the Hopscotch Cafe and Europa Cafe – Winter Aggregates Race Series.

Breakaways nearing the turnaround was the order of the day, with all races finishing in a sprint.

Brian Lee made a strong attack on the main climb in Division 4, taking Phil McLennan along for the ride with Lee winning the duel at the finish.

In Division 3, Steve Biram, Wayne Klauss and Andrew Wilson made the winning move as they turned at the top of the climb. Klauss dominant in the end.

Lindsay Burgoyne stretched the Division 2 field on the climb and provided the springboard for Dean Wells to attack. Greg Ley and Darryn Reed joined in to put the race beyond doubt. Reed holding on in an epic three-way finish.

A Shane Clarke attack blew Division 1 apart on the climb, with only Craig Lee, Jason Hendry and Sam Smith making the final selection and Hendry again proving too good in the sprint finish.

Race results – Division 1 – 1st – Jason Hendry, 2nd – Shane Clarke, 3rd – Craig Lee. Division 2 – 1st – Darryn Reed, 2nd – Greg Ley, 3rd – Dean Wells. Division 3 – 1st – Wayne Klauss, 2nd – Steve Biram, 3rd – Andrew Wilson. Division 4 – 1st – Brian Lee, 2nd – Phil McLennan, 3rd – Darryl Brown.
