EUREKA Cycling Club staged its first official race event since mid-March with criteriums in Ballarat on Sunday.

The Victoria Park criterium circuit has undergone changes since autumn with blackspot funding going towards installing a roundabout in April, as well as a bypass to allow cycling events to continue in the park.

When it came to racing small fields were the order of the day, with inclement weather deterring for many riders from getting out.

Jason Hendry and Peter Gunston proved all too powerful in Division 1, doing the bulk of the work, then finishing one-two in the field sprint.

Smart tactics in Division 2 allowed three riders to use the cross wind to form a split in the field. They then stayed away from the chasers, with Shaun Martin winning easily.

Division 3 kept bunched together in the increasing wind, with Brad Eppingstall prevailing in a four-way sprint finish.

Eureka Cycling will return to competition in January with an evening criterium series, to mark its new affiliation with AusCycling.

Division 1 (45 minutes plus 2 laps) – 1st – Jason Hendry, 2nd – Peter Gunston, 3rd – Dayne Pearce.

Division 2 (40 minutes plus 2 laps) – 1st – Shaun Martin, 2nd – James Knipe, 3rd – Craig Lightfoot.

Division 3 (35 minutes plus 2 laps) – 1st – Brad Eppingstall, 2nd – Jakkii Dawson, 3rd – Mary-Ann Seebeck
