EUREKA Cycling Club kicked off the 2021 season at a sun-soaked Victoria Park on Friday, 22 January with a trial of clockwise racing on the criterium circuit and receiving thumbs up from competitors.

In her first ever road race, trial rider Sharon Boyd went on to win Division 4, after opening an early gap on Helen McIntosh.

Division 1 – Jarrod King leads the field at the start of the race.

Darryl Brown and Luke Taylor shared much of the workload in Division 3 with the more experienced riders – Bob Morley, Jennifer Collier and Roger McMillan wisely kept out of trouble.

However, it was the newly promoted Jakkii Dawson who made the winning move some 500 metres from the finish line, taking line honours in convincing fashion.

Division 1 saw 12 riders in a race that was electric from the start. Jarrod King and Peter Gunston ensured a fast pace which had many gasping for air early on.

The strong surges took effect and split the field before the halfway mark. Gunston, Jason Hendry, Darryn Reed, Jason Birch and Dayne Pearce battled bravely, however towards the end King, Tim Canny and Jay Bourke broke away to fight out the finish with Canny prevailing by a tyre width over King.

Results (all grades 25 minutes + 2 laps) – Div 1 – 1st – Tim Canny, 2nd – Jarrod King, 3rd – Jay Bourke. Div 3 – 1st – Jakkii Dawson, 2nd – Bob Morley, 3rd – Luke Taylor. Div 4 – 1st – Sharon Boyd, 2nd – Helen McIntosh.
