DAVID King has been taken by the leadership shown by Zach Merrett in his first season as Essendon captain.

Merrett took the reins from Dyson Heppell in February this year and has seemingly taken to the key role like a duck to water.

Under new coach Brad Scott in 2023, Merrett has helped the Bombers to a seven and five record which has them sitting in sixth position on the ladder.

Individually, the midfielder is averaging 29.4 disposals, 5.7 inside 50s, 5.5 tackles, 4.8 clearances and sits in the top four for coaches votes with 52.

Ahead of last round’s meeting with Carlton, David King praised Merrett for what he has been able to achieve early in his leadership career.

“Best-led team in the competition,” King suggested of the Dons on SEN’s The Picks.

“Zach Merrett, I’ve been watching him closely just to work out what sort of captain he’s going to be.

“Is he the guy that can rally the troops and then inspire and still deliver and play both sides of the game, with it and without it?

“He’s been outstanding. Even again last week he set them up to win that game early.”

King was referencing Merrett’s inspiring first quarter in Essendon’s round 12 win over North Melbourne.

The 27-year-old amassed 16 touches, eight contested possessions, five clearances, three inside 50s and two goals to help set up the eventual six-point victory over the Kangaroos.

“It was unreal wasn’t it,” King said. “I give overs to guys who start games well. It’s easy to make 100 in the second dig when it’s not really required, but to get it off and going is just terrific.”
