YOUNG people interested in trying a new sport may find their next hobby at Russell Square.

Ballarat Touch Football Association’s six-week junior skills program is set to begin on the Monday, 7 November.

BTFA’s junior coordinator Lisa Williams said the association has an aim to grow the sport and they’re offering these spring sessions for free.

“Touch football is a minimal contact sport that actively encourages fitness, communication, team spirit, coordination, and decision making,” she said. “It contributes positively to a child’s development.

“Our junior program will also continue next year for juniors that wish to follow on learning and developing core skills that are needed to play touch football.”

Young people, whether they have a sporting background or not, are welcome to come along and have a go.

Ms Williams said the association has junior members who also play Australian rules football, basketball, soccer, rugby, hockey, and netball at a high level.

“Touch football is also excellent for Juniors who play winter sports,” she said.

Established junior touch footballers in Ballarat don’t have their own weekly competition, instead playing with adults in mixed Wednesday evening games at Russell Square, which attract about 250 players.

Some juniors play in teams with their family and friends, while others have teams of their own.

The association also has junior teams who will compete in the Victoria State Cup set to be held at Comely Banks Recreation Reserve in Melbourne’s south-east in February of next year.

The junior Ballarat Touch Football program will run from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Mondays. Contact Ms Williams on 0478 383 476 for more information.
