Linton gets win at windy Webbcona

LINTON’S Ballarat District Bowls Division Premier side travelled to Webbcona last Saturday and came away with a narrow three-shot win, with the visitors’ Peter Wilson and Brendan Williams skippering their rinks to victories.

Webbcona’s experienced skip Barry McArthur had a good game on rink one, leading throughout over Craig Grenfell’s foursome, and winning 24 to 16.

Also Linton’s president, Grenfell said it was tight struggle all day and after a short interruption due to rain towards the end, the team came back in good form and was fortunate to get shots in the final few ends.

Grenfell also said that while Linton did lose a number of experienced bowlers from last season, he was full of praise for the new team members who have taken on the game this year, and how the small country has remained competitive in all three divisions it fields sides.

“In the Premier division our side has played the top teams from last year’s competition and sits one position out of the four with two wins from their three outings so far this season,” he said.

Back down the Glenelg Highway in a reverse fixture, Linton hosted Webbcona’s Division 4 side, and also took the win, this time by 38 shots and three rinks up.

Only the visitor’s rink of Anthony Clifford managed a narrow thee-shot win. Linton’s rink skippered by Brendan Vandenberg had a decisive 17-shot victory that locked in the comfortable win at home.

Meanwhile Webbcona’s Division 1 side travelled to Central Wendouree, where strong wins by Central’s skippers Len Vincent and Anthony Gutteridge rinks assured the home side a decisive 19-shot victory.
