TWO of Redan’s rising stars, Rory Gunsser and Taj Bond, have earned themselves contracts with Geelong’s VFL team.
The talented pair have been training with the Cats’ VFL team over the summer – and in Gunsser’s case, the AFL squad – and were notified they had earned contracts this month.
Bond – originally from former Bendigo league club Maryborough – had stamped himself as one of the Ballarat league’s most exciting young rucks and forwards over the past two seasons.
He played 18 games for the Lions in 2025 and was named among the best players on 11 occasions, finishing the season with 36 goals.
The winner of the Bendigo league’s Rising Star award in 2023 while playing for Maryborough, he split time between Redan and Bendigo Pioneers in 2024, playing nine games for both sides.
Bond was a key figure in the Ballarat league’s stirring interleague win over Hampden last year.
Gunsser, who also played in that game, was similarly impressive and durable for an injury-hit Lions last season, earning a mention in the club’s best players in 11 of the 18 games he played in.
A third Lion, midfield star Brody Pope, has been training with rival VFL club Williamstown, but has committed to continue playing with Redan during 2026.
The Lions were quick to congratulate Bond and Gunsser on their move to the VFL Cats, issuing a statement on their social media accounts.
“Redan FNC is thrilled to announce our very own Rory Gunsser and Taj Bond, who were both invited to train with Geelong VFL earlier this year, have both been offered contracts for 2026,” the statement read.
“Great result boys for all the hard work you have both put in, great work lads.
“Gunner has also had the opportunity to train with the Geelong AFL squad which is an amazing experience for him.
“Reigning Best and Fairest Brody Pope had also been putting in the hard yards with Williamstown VFL before Xmas but has indicated he will be back with Redan when we return for 2026.
“Doing us proud boys, keep up the great work.
“Go Lions.”
The Cats, who finished last season in 12th spot on the VFL ladder with a 9-9 record, will again be coached by Mark Corrigan.
A strong end to their season included wins in four of their last five games.
