EUREKA Cycling members travelled to East Trentham to contest the Mary Tams Memorial Handicap on Sunday, 15 May.

Host club – Northern Cycling – provided 28 of the day’s competitors, with a dozen Eureka riders rounding out the forty starters.

Cool and windy conditions on the undulating circuit suited most of the Eureka members.

Rick Calvert, Tony Mirabella and Dean Wells in the seven-minute 30-second group had ridden through the field to take the race lead with 14 kilometres remaining.

Jason Hendry and Greg Ley in the four-minute and 30-second group were hot on their heels, with Shane Clarke and Nick Locandro riding from the scratch bunch not far behind.

Clarke and Locandro took the race lead with six kilometres remaining and powered away to decide the event, with Locandro taking the victory and fastest time in the two up sprint.

Further back down the road the race was on for the final place on the podium, with Mirabella finding his form and sprinting clear of a small bunch.
