WEBBCONA mother and son pair Leah and Ben McArthur won the BHBR Mixed Pairs Championship title at Ballarat Memorial Sport Bowling Club last Sunday.

It was an all-family affair the McArthurs matching off against the aunt and nephew pair of Elizabeth Kierce and Gary Johnson.

In the final, the precise draw bowling of all competitors, together with the occasional precision up-shots by the skippers, was a highlight of the game for the onlooking crowd.

The McArthur pair scored a six on the second end, which was a start of their dominance through the final, where they then went on to take a 15 to one lead after the first eight ends.

Kierce and Johnson started to win a few ends, but were unable to peg back the earlier lead. The final score ended up being a 21 to eight shot victory by the McArthurs.

In the earlier semi-finals played in the morning, Kierce and Johnson had a comfortable win over the Clunes pair of Eileen Spong and Alan Carnegie, in a game where the draw bowling of Kierce was a decisive factor in their team’s win.

The McArthur played City Oval’s Lyn Kelson and Gary Hamilton in their semi-final.

BHBR tournament organisers have advised if it rains this week as forecast, the first day’s play in the Mens’ Fours Championships on Sunday will probably be held at BMS. However, if suitable, it would be preferred to play on grass greens.
