BALLARAT Highlanders Rugby Club are looking for people who would like to take party in a charity rugby sevens tournament.

The daylong event is set for Saturday 23 March with 46 games to be played at Buninyong Royal Park.

The men’s competition will be made up of 16 teams with four pools of four and there will be eight teams in the women’s competition with two pools of four.

All proceeds from entry fees and an auction will be donated to Special Care Nursery and Heartfelt.

“We started doing this three years ago because sporting clubs go around asking business for money but it doesn’t do much,” said committee member Clint Smith.

“It was more of a way of giving back to the community and it’s something that we are really passionate about.

“The competition is now three times bigger so we should have three times the income to donate.”

Teams from around the country can register to play online or local individuals who wish to play can join the Highlanders.

“This year we’re offering not just men’s but women’s too because we’ve always been restricted with space,” said Smith.

“The council has been working with us and they’ve been able to supply as with Buninyong Royal Park and we will have access to two playing pitches.”

Following the day of matches there will be an auction kicking off at 6pm at the Sporting Globe.

Wadawurrung creative Jenna Olaker has donated her art for the auction and other people or business who wish to contribute can contact the Highlanders.

“We’re going to be asking our sponsors and anyone who wants to donate anything whether it’s a good or service to get in touch with us because we’ve got a much bigger target for fundraising this year,” said Smith.

Team registration for the competition can be done on Xplorer or more information can be found by emailing [email protected]
