Masters Netball Tournament enjoys successful debut

March 5, 2020 BY

THE inaugural Torquay Masters Netball Tournament saw players and spectators flock to Spring Creek Reserve to enjoy the competition and company.

Event organiser Rachel Baulch said there was a great atmosphere throughout the competition on March 1.

“Lots of families came and watched, so it was a really good community feel and a lot of fun. Though there was still a good level of competition.”

Eight teams took the courts, with players ranging from their mid-thirties to early seventies.

There were three women’s teams in both the 35-44 age category and 45-plus category, as well as two men’s teams that faced off in an exhibition match

As a recipient of the Surf Coast Shire’s Small Grants program, fully qualified umpires were able to be hired for the day.

These umpires, who Baulch said did an excellent job, also selected the best and fairest for the tournament.

In the 35-44 category the award was shared by sisters Krys Trewin and Jo Carson.

The 45 plus category was then won by Baulch herself.

Surf Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge presented the winning teams with their trophies at the end of the day.

Baulch said the event’s positive reception makes it likely to feature in years to come.

“It’s definitely something we want to continue on. There was lots of positive feedback, people had a good day.”
