THE community spirit of Wreck2Reef is embodied by one of its strongest competitors Georgie Mervin.

Mervin can regularly be seen at the sharp end of the field of triathlons and swims held in and around the Bellarine. The last two years she has won the 40-49 category at Wreck2Reef, which she is now a race ambassador for.

Yet despite achievements, Mervin is more interested in encouraging her fellow competitors than beating them.

Mervin says she enjoys that the race is run by the community and gives back to the community.

“My main motivator is that it’s a local event and it supports a local club.”

The Indented Heads Yacht Club hosts the race, with the funds from it going to their Young Tackers program.

To help support the club and the competitors, Mervin is offering some tips to people who might be viewing the calm waters of Half Moon Bay as a chance to dip their toe into open water swimming.

Mervin says having some preparation makes a big difference.

“Some open water practice will really get you race ready – so grab a friend, for safety reasons, and hit the open water.

“Practice some sighting by lifting your head every so often, as there is no black line to follow.”

On the day of the race Mervin recommends a light breakfast but drinking plenty of fluid. She says to listen carefully to the race brief and try and for a quick warmup swim.

She also advises people to pace themselves according to their capabilities.

“If you know you are a slow swimmer start at the back, take your time – don’t panic. Try breaststroke or backstroke if you need to settle and catch your breath.”

But after the race there is plenty more to enjoy.

“Gather with your friends and family to enjoy the event festivities, then get around the amazing Bellarine.”
Mervin also suggests thanking the amazing volunteers.
