GEELONG & Surf Coast Cycling Club’s (GSCC) Supervets Race on Wednesday last week saw a spectacular finish, with club president Tina Stenos claiming a narrow victory.

The club’s Supervet races are for men 60 years and older and women 50 years and older.

The quality of racing was particularly high on Wednesday, with the scratch cyclists setting an average speed of 38kph throughout the race.

The win was Stenos’ first in the Supervets this season. She said the high calibre of opposition made the victory particularly rewarding.

“There’s a lot of social interaction, but there’s a lot of competition as well.

“It’s good because those wins don’t come around very easily. The stars were aligned for me”

Graeme Wilson came in second, with David Phillips close behind in third.

Graeme Walker finished 10th but set the fastest time, finishing in 59 minutes and 17 seconds.

On Tuesday, March 17 GSCC decided to suspend racing due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

Stenos said while it was disappointing to have to do so, the health of their members is the club’s priority.

“In the interests of keeping our members safe it was the best option. They can keep riding; we just couldn’t meet the criteria of social distancing.”
