Women’s T20 season starts with nail-biter

Torquay Black started their season with a thrilling win over East Belmont Deb, chasing down their target of 118 with just three deliveries to spare.

Mikaela Monahan played a key role for them, her unbeaten 40 helping guide Torquay Black to victory.

Torquay female cricket co-ordinator and Torquay Black player Sarah Boak said it was a great event.

“It was just an amazing experience for all the girls involved. They all just thoroughly enjoyed being out there.

Boak said she was also delighted that Torquay had gotten the numbers to field two sides in the league.

“It’s been absolutely amazing to see the interest that we’ve had and the girls have just become such a close group, it’s been really good.”

Torquay Gold struggled against East Belmont Razz, who passed Torquay Gold’s score of 53 without losing a wicket. But the match provided a great experience nevertheless, as about 100 spectators turned up to Quay Reserve to watch the game.

Leopold also had a challenging opening game, with St Joseph’s defeating them by nine wickets. Former Leopold junior player Caitlin McKinlay put in a strong performance, though, the opener making a brisk 31 before being run out.

Portarlington got off to a winning start in high scoring match against Highton Durran. They chased down Highton Durran’s target of 137 with four overs to spare.

Ocean Grove will also field a team in the division but had a bye this week.
