Junortoun is approximately 27.8 square kilometres and has nine parks covering nearly 10.8 per cent of total area.

The population of Junortoun in 2016 was 3190 and by the 2021 Census it had jumped to 3862, showing strong growth of 21 per cent in the area during that time.

Junortoun is a rural residential locality on the McIvor Highway, about eight kilometres east of Bendigo.

The locality was originally named Homebush, after the Homebush Hotel which was nearly opposite the site of the Farmers Arms Hotel at Junortoun, and after the Homebush Estate – a large holding owned by the Lazarus family.

The wife of Samuel Lazarus was Mary Junor, and her surname probably inspired the place name.

Junortoun has become very popular with young families, first home buyers are flocking to this area which boasts a very high owner occupier rate of 96 per cent, one of the highest in the state.

Homebush Primary School was opened in 1875, and it continued until 1958 apart from two short closures during the 1930s and 1940s.

In 1954 the Bendigo District Trotting Club opened its trotting track, Lord’s Raceway, at Junortoun and about 20 years later rural residential subdivisions began in the area.

Although there was no local State school, a Catholic secondary college was established in the 1950s.

Junortoun has a general store, a post office, a hotel, the Homebush Hall, various trades and businesses along the McIvor Highway and a caravan park.

CoreLogic data indicates that the predominant age group in Junortoun is 10-19 years with households being primarily couples with children and are likely to be repaying on average $1950 per month on mortgages.

In general, people in Junortoun work in a professional occupation.
