SANDHURST’S fighting victory against Kyneton in Saturday’s seventh round has put the Dragons on the fifth rung of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League’s ladder.

There was plenty at stake as the Dragons took on the Tigers at Queen Elizabeth Oval.

Kyneton began the match a win clear, but almost 10 per cent behind Sandhurst.

The Ash Connick-coached Dragons led 15-14 at quarter-time and scored 3.8 to 2.0 in the second term.

With so much to play for it was the Tigers who fought back brilliantly in the third quarter.

The Paul Chapman-coached Kyneton scored 2.5 to a point to lead 43-42 at a quarter to go.

Inspired by the play of ruckman Hamish Hosking, James Coghlan, and what would be a match-high six goals by Cobi Maxted it was the Dragons who fired up to slam on 6.2 to 2.2 in the last to claim an 80-57 victory.

Young gun Harvey Gallagher also played a key role for Sandhurst by kicking three goals.

The Tigers’ attack was led by Rhys Magin and Cameron Manuel on two goals as Harrison Huntley, Hamish Yunghanns and Caleb Fisher were best for the yellow and black.

Meanwhile, it was a dogged contest between Golden Square and Gisborne at Fur Life Oval in Golden Square’s Wade Street.

Goals in time-on of the second quarter by Tom Strauch and Joel Brett and then by Jack Hickman, Braydon Vaz and Jake Thrum in the first five minutes of the third term put Square up by 31 points.

Gisborne kept on fighting, especially in the last where it scored five goals to 1.5, but it was the blue and gold who marked a 79-69 victory in the clash between third and first.

Five goals by Brock Harvey and three by Kaiden Antonowicz and the play of Michael Herlihy, Liam Byrne and Sam Langley were highlights in a 115-point win by South Bendigo at Maryborough’s Princes Park.

Callum McCarty and James Schiscka kicked five goals apiece as Strathfieldsaye won 135-22 on Kangaroo Flat’s ground.

Eaglehawk won a hard-fought clash with Castlemaine, 84-44, at Canterbury Park.
