BIG Deadly Day is set to light up Oakes Oval with a vibrant celebration of culture, sport and community in Lismore.

The free event will be held on Wednesday 8 July as part of NAIDOC Week 2026, with this year’s theme 50 years of Deadly, highlighting the effort, resilience, and leadership of the elders, activists and communities who built and sustained the movement

It will be hosted by the Ngunya Jarjum Aboriginal Corporation and CASPA, with support from Lismore City Council.

CASPA supports children and families across the region with a focus on improving wellbeing, connection and opportunities for vulnerable members of the community.

Mayor Steve Krieg said NAIDOC celebrations are standout events on Lismore’s annual calendar.

“It is one of the best days on Lismore’s calendar as there’s always a great turnout, and it’s a genuine celebration of our local culture and talent,” he said.

There will be plenty of arts and crafts celebrating Indigenous culture at the event.

“I encourage everyone to come along, bring the family, and make the most of the many fantastic stalls on offer.

“From food and craft to support services and community groups, there’s something here for everyone.

“It’s a great way to support local, learn something new and celebrate together.”

The day will begin with a Welcome to Country by local elder Aunty Charlotte Williams, followed by a cultural performance from the Widjabul Wia-bal Dance Group.

The program will feature live music, free rides, cultural crafts and activities, community and market stalls, a free barbecue lunch, wildlife shows, face painting and an Elders’ tent. Local rapper Mr Rhodes will be the headline act on the big stage at 12.15pm.

Children aged 8 to 17 can also take part in the Touch Football Gala Day.

Organisers have said that the friendly competition is designed to encourage teamwork, physical activity and stronger community connections.
