Community vision sought for Geelong’s games village

December 1, 2022 BY

The Commonwealth Games village will be built on the southern side of Waurn Ponds station.

HAVING announced the Waurn Ponds location for the 2026 Commonwealth Games village site, the state government is now seeking input from the community on how it will look and feel.

Early consultation on the village that’s destined for the green fields site opposite the southern side of Waurn Ponds station is now open and available for viewing and comment on the government’s Engage Victoria page until December 4.

There the public is being asked to help shape the villages design guidelines and objectives for construction via a survey, the communities first opportunity to get actively involved said Development Victoria’s Geoff Ward.

“We’re asking the Geelong community to tell us what makes the site in Waurn Ponds unique, and what we can do to help transform them into vibrant and sustainable communities for the long term,” Mr Ward said.

The government has promised that the process will involve consultation with Traditional Owners and the broader community and that it has an eye to environmental design also.

“Victoria 2026 will also invest significantly in community infrastructure, including housing and world-class sports facilities. This will leave a legacy of affordable housing for the regions and modern sports infrastructure to encourage Victorians to get active and attract future major events,” Mr Ward said.

“We want to hear from local residents, businesses, community groups, clubs and organisations in and around Geelong about what makes the Waurn Ponds location special now and how to enhance this for the Games, and beyond.”
