Waterfront basketball court edges closer

A new 3×3 basketball court could soon add another attraction to the Geelong waterfront, with plans for the project moving ahead thanks to Victorian government support.

The proposed court is part of the City of Greater Geelong’s Waterfront Master Plan, which aims to transform the foreshore into a more active and family-friendly destination.

Designed for casual games rather than competition, the half-court facility will cater to players of all ages and abilities while fitting seamlessly into the waterfront landscape.

Unlike a traditional basketball court, the 3×3 design does not require regulation fencing, meaning visitors will still be able to enjoy uninterrupted views across Corio Bay to the You Yangs.

The court is planned for a location near the waterfront skatepark, creating a recreation hub for young people and families.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the project balanced new recreation opportunities with protecting one of Geelong’s most recognisable public spaces.

“The new 3×3 basketball court will create a vibrant new recreational space on our waterfront, with a considered design that also respects the area’s unique character,” Cr Kontelj said.

“This design allows basketball to be incorporated into the waterfront without compromising the spectacular views that locals and visitors tell us are highly valued.

“It is another great example of council and the Victorian government working together to revitalise and reinvigorate Geelong, ensuring our waterfront continues to evolve as a major attraction and a destination for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

The concept has been championed by Geelong MP Christine Couzens, who has pledged $400,000 towards the project.

The City of Greater Geelong will continue working with Sport and Recreation Victoria and the Victorian government as the plans progress.
