Bellarine doctor creates new model for home-based healthcare

A BURNT-out GP has created a new health startup designed to meet the needs of Bellarine locals from their own homes.

Jon Corns grew frustrated with the traditional primary care system and wanted to create a better model for both patients and practitioners.

Combining his engineering background with his knowledge of the medical system, Prevento was born.

Prevento allows patients to connect with independent practitioners who provide care through home visits and telehealth consultations.

Corns said the service has already gained interest from both patients and practitioners seeking greater flexibility and control.

The patient base continues to grow, with Corns surprised by demand beyond the older clients he initially expected.

“One of the surprise standouts is the busy mum,” Corns said.

“The mums who are finding it really difficult to get the kids to a GP or to the doctor’s because it takes so long to get everyone all cleaned up and put in a car.

“I’ve been offering some evenings and weekends, and they’ve really loved that.”

Corns said one of the biggest challenges for Prevento is changing perceptions around long-term care delivered through home visits and telehealth.

He said many people view these services as one-off appointments rather than a way to build an ongoing relationship with a doctor.

“I’m trying to make people think outside the box and look at a new way of care where that can actually be your long-term doctor,” Corns said. “I’m happy to see people as a one-off, but really it’s about that long-term continuity of care.”
