FAMILIES from across Geelong descended on the Norlane ARC for this year’s Velitas y Farolitos Festival.

Held on December 6 by the Geelong Latin American Movement, the event brought people together for an evening of joy, music and a mixture of cultural traditions and modern festivities.

Event organiser Elly Lopez said the festival was a resounding success with plenty of activities on offer.

“Children were captivated by the variety of games available throughout the festival grounds,” she said. “Their laughter echoed through the air, painting the evening with a sense of innocence and pure delight.”

The festival, a celebration of the beginning of the Christmas season, featured performances from Los Locos Band and ensemble Abyanama, which were an event highlight.

“The ensemble Abyanama provided a moment of heartfelt reflection during the Tree of Life ceremony,” Ms Lopez said.

“With candles in hand, attendees gathered to savour the sublime music of the Andes. The ensemble’s melodies filled hearts with peace, inspiring a sense of unity and gratitude for life’s blessings.”

Attendees were also surrounded by candles for the Tree of Life ceremony, where they paused to reflect on what it means to live in Geelong.

“The Velitas y Farolitos Festival not only showcased the rich cultural tapestry of our community, but also reminded us of the joy and peace that comes from gathering together,” Ms Lopez said.
