HOPE Bereavement Care is set to host its tenth annual Sports Breakfast, a key fundraiser in support of the Geelong community in mourning.

This year, the event welcomes Roxie Bennett as host and features Gary Rohan, Geelong Football Club’s 2022 premiership player, as the keynote speaker.

The fundraiser plays a crucial role in sustaining Hope’s commitment to providing free counselling and support services to those grieving the loss of babies, children, adults, and individuals lost to suicide.

Executive officer Salli Hickford said the community played a vital role in Hope’s operations.

“Lacking government or recurrent funding, our work is entirely supported by the Geelong community and philanthropic organisations,” she said

The breakfast not only highlights a sports figure but also gives a platform to individuals who have experienced profound loss and found support through Hope.

The event, popular among local businesses, often sees tables bought to support the cause, demonstrating the community’s commitment to ensuring no one navigates their grief journey alone.

In the last year alone, Hope, alongside its partners, has supported 714 individuals through 1,563 counselling sessions, facilitated 83 bereavement support groups, and connected over 600 people at remembrance events.

“This breakfast is not just a fundraiser; it’s a lifeline that allows us to reach out to more people in their grief,” Hickford said.

“The support from these events and the generosity of our community are why we can ensure that no one has to face their grief alone.”

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, in the Presidents Room at Kardinia Park.

Tickets are priced at $95, including a cooked breakfast, with all proceeds helping Hope continue its crucial work in the Geelong community.
