Job opportunities for Geelong and Surf Coast as Metricon Homes’ regional business booms

August 6, 2020 BY

The HomeBuilder scheme will create many new job opportunities for locals, as Metricon plan to undertake a high volume of building from the back end of this year.

Local building and construction workers will be in demand as Metricon Homes’ regional Victorian business booms on the back of the federal government’s HomeBuilder scheme.

The scheme – which provides eligible owner-occupiers (including first home buyers) with a grant of $25,000 to build a new home valued up to $750,000 – was announced on June 4 and has helped fuel record visitor numbers to the Metricon website, strong return visits to display homes and a good level of enquiry in Geelong and the Surf Coast.
Metricon’s Regional West Manager Simon Taylor said the introduction of the scheme has bolstered the confidence of those thinking of building and contributed to a boom in activity in our regional markets.
“This will create many new job opportunities for locals, as we plan to undertake a high volume of building in the back end of this year and early next year.
“By having a local team, we are able to offer a far more personal experience for our customers,” Mr Taylor said.
“We pride ourselves on the fact that we are providing local customer service at every turn to ensure they have a great home building experience.”
Opportunities for site managers, estimators and draftspersons will be advertised via Seek.

The availability of home and land packages under $750,000 and the existing $20,000 First Home Owner grant, which can be combined with HomeBuilder, are among the reasons why regional Victoria has benefited from the new scheme.
“First home buyers are definitely a very active segment of Metricon customers at the moment,” Mr Taylor said.
“HomeBuilder is an additional $25,000 incentive on top of existing first home buyer government grants, along with continued stamp duty exemptions and discounts, that are giving first home buyers in secure work more confidence to plan their purchases.
“We are also seeing upsizers who have been considering building for some time and had to put their plans on the back burner due to COVID-19, pull-forward purchase decisions in order to take advantage of the scheme.
“Low interest rates and the fact that banks are lending, also combine to create a good situation to buy at the moment.”
However, Mr Taylor believes people working successfully from home amid COVID-19 restrictions has also contributed to the growing interest in regional Victoria.
“With many organisations looking to embrace working from home beyond COVID-19 restrictions, regional living is now a more attractive option,” he said.
“More people are considering a tree-change or a sea-change, if they only need to commute a few days per week as opposed to five days or can work entirely from home.
“With the effects COVID-19 has had on the way we live and work, we have seen our customers re-evaluate what is important to them in their homes and more have definitely been drawn to home designs that include dedicated studies or study nooks.”
All Metricon’s display homes throughout Geelong and the Surf Coast are currently open by private appointment only.

“We are adhering to rigorous social distancing and hygiene measures in all our displays, with the health and wellbeing of our staff and customers front of mind. We appreciate your help in adhering to these measures when visiting, including wearing a face mask,” Mr Taylor said.
