Fair of the old keeps history alive

UNIQUE and beautiful pieces, some centuries old, will be displayed and sold at the fifty-first Ballaarat Antique Fair.

Running during the Ballarat Heritage Festival from Friday, 19 to Sunday, 21 May, the Civic Hall-based event will be led by its owner-manager of 35 years Louise Russell.

“As a dealer, it’s really important to showcase and keep the history and the industry alive,” she said. “I’m passionate about that, and that’s why I took on fairs.

“There are so few shops these days to buy, as well as to browse. This gives dealers the opportunity to sell, and the serious buyers a chance to see 29 different dealers of a particular quality, under one roof.

“They’re all highly regarded experts from four different states in Australia. They are all happy to talk and share their knowledge.”

Casual browsers or avid collectors can expect to see classic, rare, intricate, fragile, weird, and wonderful antiques, including jewellery, furniture, silverware, ceramics, artwork, and linen.

The fair is set to run for the first time in three years, slightly later in Autumn than usual, and Ms Russell said she enjoys providing a space where people can step back in time.

“It fits in very well with the Heritage Festival,” she said. “Come along and see things you perhaps grew up with.

“On Friday we’re opening from 4pm to 8pm, with a beautiful vintage Rolls-Royce out the front, and we’ve got a brass band playing on Saturday and Sunday.”

The Ballaarat Antique Fair will open on Friday 19, May from 4pm to 8pm, Saturday, 20 May from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday, 21 May from 10am to 4pm.
