Rethinking retirement: Why downsizing can be an exciting new chapter

July 20, 2023 BY

Downsizing doesn’t mean a tiny home and Ingenia Lifestyle offers a range of options.

MANY people approaching retirement feel daunted by the next steps.

If part of that consideration is where to live, you’re probably familiar with the term ‘downsizing’.

In general, ‘downsizing’ means moving from a larger to a smaller home, and in many cases freeing up equity to alleviate financial pressure.

Downsizing can be an appealing option, especially if you’re worried about home maintenance on a large, or deteriorating, family home, or you want somewhere you can safely ‘lock up and leave’ while you set out to explore the country.

As with any important life decision, you need to weigh up what’s best for you.

Your downsizing decision will include many specific considerations, but the big three focus areas are undoubtedly location, community, and finance.

Location is a very personal aspect, but the majority of downsizers stay relatively close to their family or local area (not surprising when beautiful historic Ballarat is in your backyard!).

Community plays an important role in everyone’s life, so surrounding yourself with like-minded people is key.

But while a thriving social life is wonderful, having your own space like a private garden or light-filled living areas to retreat to, is just as important.

The final community consideration is shared facilities. Will the community you move to have a pool, bowling green, event spaces or a gym?

From a financial perspective, it’s important to thoroughly understand any finances or fees before you commit.

To find out more about living your best life in retirement, head along to Ingenia’s information session at Ballarat Golf Club on Tuesday 25 July.

But not all downsizing options are the same. For example, the Ingenia Lifestyle financial model has no exit fees, no DMFs and no stamp duty, plus any capital gains you make on your new home are yours to keep.

When downsizing means low maintenance living that doesn’t break the bank, in a secure community where your neighbours are likely to become your friends, then downsizing decisions can shift from daunting to exciting.

If you’re considering your next chapter, and want to find out more, head along to Ingenia’s information session at Ballarat Golf Club on Tuesday 25 July at 11am.
