Salt Torquay set to provide a Surf Coast region first in Specialist Disability Accommodation.

 

IN a first for the Surf Coast, a group of local professionals with a shared passion to enable people with a disability access to the unique Torquay lifestyle are collaborating at Salt.

Salt is fast being recognised for commitment to sustainability and liveability and will soon include Specialist Disability Accommodation in direct response to community need.

Expressions of interest are being sought for a select number of purpose built, SDA houses to be constructed by SDA Fund Australia.

SDA Fund chair Mark Casey said that he is delighted to be able to incorporate SDA within the quality development of Salt Townhomes, and is a passion project for him.

NDIS Provider, Inhab Australia will be the interface between the developer, builder and the participant to ensure people with extreme functional impairment, and or very high support needs can be accommodated with full support.

Director Alison McLeod said that this exciting new project is set to address the situation where people are residing in substandard accommodation waiting for exactly this type of option.

“This project will not only meet, but exceed the requirements of the NDIA Design Standard released in October 2019,” Ms McLeod said.

Surf Coast Shire Mayor Rose Hodge, who is passionate about providing more suitable disability care and support in the region, said that it is great to see this fantastic collaboration taking place in the Surf Coast.

“It would be wonderful if every new estate had this level of inclusiveness to enable everyone to be an active part of their local community,” Cr Hodge said.

Surf Coast CEO Keith Baillie also acknowledged the importance of this initiative for more supportive disability accommodation in the Shire.

“Council is supportive of this type of integrated development and would like to see projects like this expanded to other communities in the region,” he said.
