Heathcote holds top spot

VICTORIOUS in all three matches, Heathcote leads the Division Three ladder in Saturday pennant for the Bendigo leg of Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields Bowls.

The Saints are on home greens this Saturday to play Eaglehawk from 1.30pm.

A tally of 50 points and 105 shots up has Heathcote leading the race from Serpentine 36 and +28, Kangaroo Flat on 29 and -9 and Eaglehawk with 22 and -20.

Heathcote won three of four rinks in last Saturday’s match against South Bendigo.

After the final bowl, Heathcote led 91-79.

The Maurice Lee-skipped team won six of the last seven ends to claim a 21-17 victory.

Adam Luxford overcame a slow start to win 30-17, while Bill Gardiner held a one-shot lead after 14 ends before the Diggers fired up to roll to a 29-19 result.

The Chris Morcom-skipped rink won 21-16 and on six shots on the fifth end was a highlight as Morcom led by six after nine.

In division six, Heathcote marked a hard-fought 67-60 win against Golden Square.

Grant Baker and Denis Kilner won by margins of 12 and five shots while the Tony Leahy-skipped rink went down 17-27.

The Saints play Eaglehawk this Saturday.

It’s fourth against second as Heathcote rolls into the contest on 28 points and -3 shots against a Borough line-up on 32 points and +7 shots.

In midweek pennant, Heathcote heads to Bendigo East for next Monday’s division two match at 9.30am.

The Saints marked their second win of the season in last Monday’s home game against Kangaroo Flat.

It was 53-47 in favour of Heathcote, with a highlight being a 26-11 win by Lorraine Speirs while Eileen O’Brien’s rink was level on the fifth, eighth and 10th ends.

The Roos won four of the last five ends to claim a 17-11 victory.

After a slow start, Dot Cutajar fought back to draw level on the 10th end and her rink won the last three ends, but Flat claimed a 19-16 win.

In club news, Tuesday night social bowls starts next Tuesday at 7pm and mixed social bowls on Wednesday from 1pm, while pennant practice is held on Thursday from 4pm and followed by a meal at 6pm.
