Strong start by Saints

HEATHCOTE will be keen to keep the winning run rolling in this Saturday’s play in the Bendigo leg of Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields pennant bowls action.

The Saints made a superb start to the 2023-24 season by winning last Saturday’s first-round matches in divisions three and six by 40 and five shots.

This Saturday, Heathcote heads to Golden Square for the division three match.

The Saints won all four rinks against Bendigo to record a 95-55 victory in the season opener.

The Bill Gardiner-skipped rink won 25-16.

New skipper Adam Luxford scored six shots on the second end and led by seven shots after 14 ends and rolled on to record a 20-15 victory.

Chris Morcom’s rink held a 15-shot lead after 12 ends and went on for a 25-8 victory.

Maurice Lee marked a 25-16 win against the blue and gold.

In division six the Saints made their way to Inglewood and won a top contest, 66-61.

Scores were level after 14 ends before Denis Kilner’s rink won the final end for an 18-16 result.

Tony Leahy overcame a slow start to lead by a shot after 15 ends.

It was the Bulldogs who lifted for a 24-17 result and wins on five consecutive ends gave Grant Baker’s rink a 12-shot lead nine ends.

Baker fired up for a 31-21 victory.

The Saints are at home to play division six opponent, Castlemaine this Saturday.

Round three in Midweek Pennant is on next Monday from 9.30am and Heathcote hosts White Hills.

The Saints have a one-one record.

In last Monday’s play, Heathcote was beaten by Castlemaine, 49-76 as the Magpies won all three rinks.

For the Saints the Dot Cutajar-skipped rinks was beaten by 11 shots.

Heathcote team-mates Lorraine Speirs and Eileen O’Brien went down by margins of seven and nine shots.

The Saints won the first-round match against Golden Square, 12-67 to 4-66.

In house keeping new, Social bowls is played on Wednesdays at Heathcote Bowling Club from 1pm, pennant practice on Thursdays starts at 4pm and will be followed by a meal at 6pm.

Tuesday social pennant starts with registration night on 7 November.
