More than a restaurant

MORE than two decades ago, one family’s decision to swap the fast pace of Sydney for the welcoming community of Mount Gambier began a journey that continues to enrich the Limestone Coast today. Through authentic Indian cuisine, heartfelt hospitality and an unwavering passion for their craft, Gourmet India Restaurant has become far more than a place to dine—it has become part of the community’s story.

When the opportunity arose to take over Gourmet India in 2006, the owner, Bishan Pandey and his wife Asha (pictured), saw this more than a business and moved from Sydney to Mount Gambier. For Bishan, ( who is a professional chef from New Delhi, India and have worked all over places like Singapore, Christchurch, Sydney and Adelaide ) it was an opportunity to share the rich flavours and traditions of Indian cuisine while building meaningful connections with the local people who would soon become their regular customers and friends.

Like many family-owned businesses, the journey has not always been easy. Running a restaurant in a regional community demands resilience, sacrifice and countless hours of dedication. Yet through every challenge, one thing has remained constant—the owner’s love and passion for his work.

“I have never thought about giving up,” the owner says. “I love what I do and will continue as long as I enjoy it. My dream has always been to build a legacy that people will remember.”

For Gourmet India, success has never been measured solely by awards or achievements. Instead, it is found in the everyday moments that have shaped the restaurant’s story over more than 20 years. Seeing children who once visited with their parents now returning with families of their own, and knowing customers continue to choose Gourmet India for birthdays, anniversaries and life’s most treasured celebrations, are among the team’s greatest rewards.

To the owners, business excellence means consistently delivering the best food, service and experience, while striving to exceed customers’ expectations through quality, authenticity and genuine hospitality. That philosophy has earned Gourmet India the loyalty of generations of locals and visitors alike, establishing the restaurant as a trusted part of Mount Gambier’s dining landscape.

Being recognised in the Business Excellence – Limestone Coast feature is a proud milestone, but for the family behind Gourmet India, the greatest achievement has always been the relationships they’ve built within the community.

“We couldn’t have done this without the constant love, support and appreciation of our loyal customers,” Bishan says. “Thank you to the Mount Gambier community for welcoming our family and supporting us for more than 20 years. We look forward to continuing to serve you with the same passion and dedication for many years to come.”
