YARNS over the Yardrails is returning to the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards after a successful event in 2025.

Anyone involved in farming, primary production, agriculture and related industries is invited to come along on Wednesday, July 22 from 11am to 2pm for a chance to connect over a free meal, hear from guest speakers, and build stronger local connections.

Southern Limestone Coast Council Mayor Kylie Boston said the event builds on last year’s success while responding to current challenges faced by the region’s agricultural sector.

“Our community is facing a lot of uncertainty, from changing seasonal conditions to global fuel pressures and social isolation. Yarns over the Yardrails provides a space to share strategies and talk honestly with others who understand life on the land,” Mayor Boston said.

“This event highlights the saleyards not only as a hub for commerce, but as a place where our community can share knowledge and support each other through rough seasons.”

Guest speakers on the day will include Todd Woodard of Peel Pastoral, sharing his experience implementing carbon-smart farming practices locally, and Director of De Garis Lawyers Donna Jaeschke providing insights into succession planning practices including options such as trust structures.

As the keynote speaker, comedian Marc Ryan, also known as The Beautiful Bogan, will bring humour and honesty to a conversation about mental health by drawing on his own lived experience.

“People in a room together, connecting over food and laughter – that’s how we build the strength and resilience that gets communities through tough times. That’s why events like these are so important,” Mr Ryan said.

Chief Executive Officer Gary Button said council was proud to play a part in prioritising rural wellbeing by creating opportunities for the agricultural community to come together.

“Council thanks the Department of Primary Industries and Regions as well as our stakeholders and partners across the district for supporting the Yarns event and keeping our regional network strong,” Mr Button said.

RSVPs are essential for catering purposes. Please contact the Southern Limestone Coast Council’s Community Development team on (08) 8738 3000 to book a spot by Friday, July 17.

This is a Connecting Communities event sponsored by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions through the Family and Business Support Program as part of the $117 million Drought Support Package.
