Festival exhibition space marks milestone

THE Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival (PCAF) is marking the first anniversary of its Still Water Studio, an art exhibition space situated in the heart of Penola’s Church Street.

Since opening its doors 12 months ago, the studio has quickly become a beloved hub for arts and culture in the region.

Over the past year, it has attracted an average of 300 visitors each month, drawing people from across Australia and internationally.

Studio coordinator Peta Baverstock reflected on the milestone said it was hard to believe it has only been twelve months since Still Water Studio was opened in Penola.

“It has so quickly become a much-loved arts and culture space in Penola with art exhibitions, local events, and regular dance and yoga classes,” she said.

Still Water Studio welcomes guests from Fridays to Mondays and is staffed by a dedicated team of local volunteers.

The studio is currently showcasing an exhibition by Chelsea Dynan, a Limestone Coast artist, titled ‘Silent Mourning’ and will remain on display until December 22.

Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival president John Mossop said they were thrilled to host the first solo exhibition by local artist Chelsea Dynan who won the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Packers Prize earlier this year.

“Her art is stunning, and it feels very much at home at Still Water Studio,” he said.

Looking ahead to January, Still Water Studio will host the Second Chance Art Sale.

This exhibition will feature pre-loved artworks available for purchase and immediate collection.

The display will evolve as works are sold and new (second hand) pieces are added.

The exhibition will be officially opened by Phoebe Kemp, aged 15, who designed the art poster originally entered in the Design Prize competition.

Studio curator Amelia Balnaves encouraged people to start gathering their pre-loved art to sell in the January exhibition.

“The Second Chance Art Sale offers a way to recycle art and gives donors a chance to earn money after Christmas,” Amelia said.

Submissions for the Second Chance Art Sale will be accepted from December 15 and throughout January. Entry forms are available for download from the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival website or can be collected directly from Still Water Studio.

Still Water Studio is always seeking new exhibitions and volunteers and the local community is encouraged to participate and contribute.

Registrations for the 2026 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival events are now open online, and further details can be found on the official website at www.artsfestival.com.au
