Generations in Jazz returns with world-class acts and rising young talent
Generations in Jazz 2026 returns to Mount Gambier from May 1–3, featuring Tower of Power, the Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra and thousands of young musicians from across Australia and New Zealand.
Mount Gambier is set to come alive as Generations in Jazz returns from Friday 1 – Sunday 3 May 2026, bringing together thousands of students, educators and music lovers from across Australia and New Zealand.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading youth jazz events, the festival continues to grow in both scale and reputation.
The festival is not only a school-based competition but a major public event, combining student performances with world-class guest artists.
This year’s festival begins with a standout Friday night Welcome Concert featuring the Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra.
This elite ensemble showcases some of Australia’s finest emerging jazz musicians and will be joined by internationally acclaimed Belgian trumpeter and composer Bert Joris.
Saturday night will see one of the festival’s most anticipated highlights, with California’s Tower of Power headlining the Gala Concert.
With more than 50 years on the world stage, Tower of Power is celebrated as one of the most influential and electrifying live acts of all time.
From iconic tracks like What Is Hip?, Soul Vaccination and You’re Still a Young Man, to their unmistakable sound and precision musicianship.
A key highlight of the festival is its prestigious scholarship program, designed to support the next generation of jazz artists.
The GIJ Vocal Scholarship, sponsored by MGA Insurance Group recognises outstanding young vocalists aged 21 and under, offering a $10,000 annual grant to help develop their musical careers.
Alongside this, the James Morrison Scholarship sponsored by Benara Pastoral celebrates exceptional instrumentalists aged 19 and under, also awarding $10,000 and providing the 2026 winner with automatic entry into the Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra in 2027.
These scholarships not only provide financial support but offer a rare opportunity for emerging talent to perform on one of Australia’s most iconic jazz stages and take the next step in their musical journey.
With record participation numbers and continued growth, Generations in Jazz 2026 promises a vibrant weekend celebrating music, education and community, reinforcing its place as the largest Big Band festival in Australia and a must-attend event on the Limestone Coast’s calendar.
