Running for a cause

October 18, 2025 BY

THE countdown is on to next month’s Coonawarra Running Festival.

Now is the time to register for one of the November 8 events — choose from the 1km, 6.3km, 12.6km, or 21.1km runs, or take part in the unique Wobbly Winery Walk (6km, 6 wineries enjoy a taste of magnificent Coonawarra wines at each venue!).

The first race commences at 8.30am and even if you aren’t participating come along to Coonawarra Park or cheer the runners along the route (see website for route details – bring your cow bell).

The Coonawarra Running Festival is about more than just running, walking, or wobbling — it’s a full day of fun for everyone and, most importantly, raises awareness and funds for mental health in the region.

Funds have been utilised by delivering Youth Mental Health Awareness sessions to students at Penola High School, Lucindale Area School, and Naracoorte High School — with Allendale and Kingston Area Schools next in line.

Penola High School highly recommends the Youth Mental Health Session.:

“After seeing our students participating in the Breakthrough Mental Health sessions, I’ve seen firsthand how much of a positive impact it has had on our students,” a school spokesperson said. “They’ve gained a better understanding of mental health and how to take care of it, which has helped reduce the stigma around it.

“The students learned practical strategies to manage stress and anxiety, like mindfulness and time management techniques. They’ve also built resilience, learning how to bounce back from challenges in healthier ways.

“The session has improved their communication skills, creating stronger peer relationships, and I’ve noticed a shift toward them prioritising their mental wellbeing.

“Ultimately, they’ve walked away with not only valuable coping tools, but also the knowledge of where to turn for support when needed, which will help them succeed both academically and emotionally. And to top it off, they had fun with the showbags they received.”

On Saturday, November 8, all roads lead to Coonawarra Park, where there will be a raft of activities outside of the walking and running:

Live music all day from Jeff’s music, Lady and The Amp and a performance Coonawarra Choir

Performances from Air Intensity students

A children’s activity area, face painting, and a petting zoo.

The (always entertaining!) mini fun run (around Coonawarra Park)

A Show ‘n Shine featuring unique vehicles

Market stalls to kickstart your Christmas shopping

Food and drinks — both alcoholic and non-alcoholic

Buses will be available from Penola and Mt Gambier if there is enough demand. Bookings are essential. Check Facebook for further information.
