What a catch
WATTLE Range Council is excited to announce the return of the Rivoli Bay Jetties Junior Fishing Competition as part of the April Full Throttle in Wattle School Holiday Program.
This year’s event will run from Monday, April 13, to Tuesday, April 21, at the Beachport Jetty.
Due to works on the Southend Jetty, this year’s competition will be held exclusively at the Beachport Jetty, with safety remaining a top priority.
Participants are urged to register now to secure their spot in the competition to ensure they receive their free fishing kit.
The free fishing kits include a rod, reel, whiting rig, tackle box, and measuring stick.
If children already have fishing gear, they can choose to receive one of the limited quantity $30 vouchers to spend on fishing supplies from The Rivoli Bay Deli and Jarmos Automotive in Beachport.
A workshop will be held on Monday, April 13, from 9am to 12noon at the Beachport Recreation Centre to kick off the competition and distribute the registration packs and fishing kits.
The Beachport Rivoli Bay Lions Club play a pivotal role at the workshop.
They teach kids how to tie knots and bait hooks while building the skills and confidence they need to get started.
Fisheries (PIRSA), OzFish, and Recfish also join in, providing guidance on sustainable fishing practices and helping young anglers learn to care for our waterways.
Wattle Range Council director of development services Emma Clay said they want every child to have the opportunity to experience fishing, by providing the equipment, guidance and confidence they need to get outdoors, give it a go, and have fun.
The competition features three age groups:
Wobbegongs – 6 years and underTigers – 7 to 11 yearsGreat Whites – 12 to 17 yearsThere are also categories for fun photos and an open shark category for all ages.
Presentations will be held on Thursday, April 23, at the Beachport Bowling Club, with a range of great prizes up for grabs.
Last year’s competition attracted more than 330 young anglers, making it the largest land based junior fishing competition in the Southern Hemisphere.
Council encourages all children to take part in this exciting event and make the most of fishing in Rivoli Bay.
