Artists to peer into mind’s eye

March 3, 2016 BY

Surf Coast artists will delve into the depths of their psyche to celebrate the shire’s first Mental Health Week this year.

Art of The Minds will be an art-based celebration, to be held during the week of October 9-15 at Eagles Nest Fine Art Gallery in Aireys Inlet.

Comprising 20 community-based artists, Art of the Minds will share personal stories of those experiencing mental illness, and showcase pieces that reflect positive ways in which the arts assist in managing mental illness.

At the event, there will also be opportunities to learn more about mental illness and ways to support yourself and others in the recovery journey.

Artist and master mental health instructor and trainer Jules Haddock from The Anxious Bird is coordinating the event and encouraging all to engage themselves and friends and family in the conversation about mental health.

Surf Coast artists are invited to apply to be a part of Art of the Minds.

To be eligible, you must have been impacted in some way by mental illness, be prepared to share an outline of that story, use art to manage your mind and be over 18 years old.

Participating artists will attend a two-hour workshop covering the major impacts of mental illness and strategies of self-support and support for others and are encouraged to invite others to attend.

To apply, contact Jules Haddock at [email protected] with a short story of how art assists your mental wellbeing and a sample of work or an outline of the piece you intent to create.

Please note there will be size restrictions for artworks and places will be limited.
