Surf Music’s Chris Hay chats to local musician Casey Hartnett.

CH: What does Round the Twist mean to you having grown up in Aireys Inlet?

Casey: I think Round The Twist was a pretty special series for a lot of people who grew up watching ABC Kids in the 90s. And definitely had some extra significance having the lighthouse in town. The first Sleep Decade LP “Into Spinning Lights” is actually a reference to lighthouses. We did some pre-production for the album in Aireys Inlet and recorded it in Point Lonsdale. The name seemed apt given both towns have lighthouses.

CH: What’s the story behind the title of Sagamore’s debut EP, Charlemont Reef?

Casey: Sam (Sagamore’s singer/songwriter/guitarist) decided on the name. He’s from Ocean Grove and I think just liked the local significance. Album ended up being a very “coastal” production. Funded by QMF grant, recorded in Aireys Inlet, mastered in Point Lonsdale, named after the reef at 13th Beach, album artwork by Kasper Raglus from Aireys – It wasn’t intentional, but it’s nice it worked out that way.

CH: Favourite board?

Casey: Currently riding a custom shortboard shaped for me by Shyama Buttonshaw. It’s a definite favourite! I think the best board I’ve ever had. And mixing it up with a twinny that I made with some help from my friend Nick Huggins who’s an amazing musician/producer/shaper. It doesn’t go so great but I certainly learnt a lot from the process – It’s a quirky, challenging and fun board to ride.
