GEELONG’S CircArts Academy is fast developing a reputation for producing elite circus performers of tomorrow.
With three students set to compete in National Finals in October, and a host of experienced coaches, CircArts is on a mission to inspire a new generation of artists, promoting body positivity and building confidence through self-discovery and achievement.
Former Geelong student and CircArts coach Leigh Rhodes has graduated from the acclaimed National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) and is embarking on a full-time career of performing nationally and abroad.
Two other Geelong students were recently accepted into the NICA program; testimony to the amazing work of the professional coaches at the CircArts Academy.
Some people may think circus consists of simply juggling and hoola hoops, but that is just the tip of the iceberg for today’s circus performers, according to CircArts Academy owner Rosa Pagani.
“It’s not just the skills you learn, it’s the training mentality and inner strength that comes with learning what you are truly capable of, when you dedicate yourself,” Rosa says, before rattling off a list that includes contortion, trapeze, silks, lyra (aerial hoop), tumbling, juggling, strength and flex work.
“What I love about circus is that unlike any other sport, no matter what your age, size, shape or fitness level you can find a discipline that you can train and enjoy to an exceptional level.
“Contortion requires flexibility, juggling hand-eye co-ordination…. there are so many apparatus and everyone has a role to play.”
CircArts Academy is based in Breakwater and is home to more than 250 budding circus performers each week.
The youngest is aged three and the oldest is 68. Seniors classes coming soon.
“Not everybody is here to become a professional performer but they are all here because they enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere,” Rosa says.
“The sense of achievement you feel when you learn a new skill under the guidance of some amazingly talented coaches is so rewarding.”
CircArts Academy is now taking enrolments for 2019.
Beginner classes are available for children and adults alike and no experience is necessary.
Introductory classes are running on October 6! You don’t need any experience or fitness start, you’ll get that when you do!
