THE world’s best cyclists will whizz along the coast and through the hinterland in the Surf Coast Classic, and the community can get close to the action.

The women’s race will be contested Wednesday, January 28, followed by the men on Thursday, January 29. The Classic is the precursor to the 2026 Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

Mayor Libby Stapleton said the point-to-point Classic races start in Lorne and finish in Torquay, taking in Deans Marsh and Modewarre.

“The start line area on Mountjoy Parade in Lorne promises to be a hive of activity,” the mayor said. “Locals can see the cyclists prepare for their race and then give them a big cheer as they set off.

“The community can also line the home straight on The Esplanade, near Fishermans Beach, in Torquay and soak up the excitement of the end of the races. Whether it’s a sprint finish or a solo rider taking honours, it’s always a thrill to watch that final stretch.”

Cadel Evans will also be at the Torquay finish line from 1.30pm onwards for both races, giving spectators the chance to grab a selfie with him.

This year’s Surf Coast Classic races have been elevated to the prestigious UCI ProSeries Calendar.

“Rider feedback following the 2025 edition was extremely positive,” race director Scott Sunderland said.

“Several riders described the Surf Coast Classic as one of the hardest races they have ever contested, reflected in their very high average power outputs.

“I am personally very excited to see the 2026 edition, which will, for the first time, feature all 18 World Teams.”

Cr Stapleton said the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, which includes the Surf Coast Classic, has an estimated regional economic benefit of $17.8 million.

“This international sporting event attracts approximately 20,000 spectators,” she said.

“There’s a real buzz in the lead-up to the event as cyclists, crews and fans descend on the Surf Coast. I love seeing the teams out for training rides and enjoying a coffee or bite to eat at local hospitality venues.

“The Cadel Road Race also showcases our stunning Surf Coast and hinterland across the globe through its significant media coverage.

“I encourage locals to make the most of the opportunity to watch these elite athletes in our own backyard.”

Both the women’s and men’s Surf Coast Classic races will start in Lorne at 11am.

With finish times estimations only, spectators are encouraged to be at the finish line in Torquay before 1.45pm.
