DIFFERENT, DIFFERENT

Different coughs require different treatment...but what’s the difference?

It is not unusual for the common cold or influenza (the flu) to cause you to develop an annoying winter cough, but it is also important to realise that certain types of coughs can be more serious and may require medical attention.

THE COMMON COLD
Colds, or upper respiratory tract infections, are the number one cause of illness in both adults and children. Colds are caused by viruses, so antibiotics (which only kill bacteria) cannot help, as they are not effective against a viral infection.

The common cold often starts with a sore throat, and other symptoms gradually develop over a few days.

Usually lasting for between 7-10 days, a cold does not usually result in serious health problems.

Unfortunately, the only real cure for a common cold is to wait until it has run its course. Luckily, your pharmacy can provide you with effective relief of your symptoms while you wait for them to resolve.

INFLUENZA (THE FLU)
Although it is another viral infection, the flu is more serious than a cold. Flu symptoms come on very quickly and severely, and include exhaustion, a high fever (>38.5 degrees Celcius), body aches, chills and sweating, sore throat, headache, and a cough. It can result in serious health problems and hospitalisations, especially in older people and those with an underlying medical condition.

Immunisation can protect you from the flu – it’s a good time to get vaccinated now!

Anti-viral treatments (available with a prescription) are only helpful in the first 48 hours of an influenza infection, so it is best to consult your doctor at the first sign of symptoms. Paracetamol and cough medicine can help to reduce your symptoms.
