Young Tiger Trigg making his mark after seamless Torquay transition

AT just 20 years old, Hugh Trigg is one of the youngest players taking the field in senior football each week, but he is quickly proving age is no barrier.

The former North Ballarat forward arrived at Torquay after time with Port Melbourne in the VFL and has settled seamlessly into the Tigers’ senior side.

Happy with his decision to head down the highway, Trigg said head coach Dom Gleeson has delivered on his promises.

“Everything he’s promised has definitely come to fruition,” Trigg said.

“He told me the footy club was going to be a great place and I have nothing but approval for that statement. It’s a wonderful place and a wonderful team.”

 

Trigg said the club’s support extends beyond matchday, with teammates and coaches invested in players both on and off the field.

“Everyone gets around each other, they’re supportive and encouraging, asking how your week has been, because life’s not always about footy,” he said.

“It’s great to have mates approaching to talk about life outside of footy.”

Trigg has continued travelling between Ballarat and Torquay this season, with work commitments preventing a full relocation.

The kilometres have been worth it.

“It’s nice just to get a bit of a break from the cold weather,” Trigg said.

 

Trigg kicked seven goals in the Tigers’ 136-point win over Ocean Grove last weekend, crediting his teammates for creating opportunities in attack.

Now with 38 goals for the 2026 season, he said the feeling of putting the ball through the big sticks never gets old.

With five home-and-away games remaining, Torquay appears well-placed for a finals campaign.

Trigg said his focus is on keeping his body fresh, with two byes in July providing valuable recovery time.

“The top five’s really, really strong and each game in finals will be life or death, so it’ll be a really competitive and great atmosphere come finals,” he said.

Torquay will play sixth-placed Portarlington in their round 16 game this weekend.
